Scott Ainslie
Temporary Works Lead, Balfour BeattyScott is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Temporary Works Lead at Balfour Beatty, with more than 20 years’ experience in the design and construction of civil engineering infrastructure. He spent eight years in site engineering and management roles before specialising in temporary works design, giving him a strong practical understanding of buildability, construction methodology and sequencing.
His experience encompasses the design, checking and management of temporary works across major highways, bridges, rail, buildings and energy infrastructure. Scott has particular expertise in bridge construction and demolition, construction-stage stability and the interaction between temporary and permanent works. He also has extensive experience in temporary road alignments and complex traffic staging, including phased construction on live highway networks. Combining site delivery, engineering management and design experience, Scott takes a practical approach to developing engineering solutions that are safe, buildable and responsive to the realities of construction.

A9 Moy Rail Bridge: Designing for Construction
- An overview of the new Moy Rail Bridge and the challenges of delivering a major highway structure over an operational railway.
- How the original specimen design was challenged and developed in response to site constraints, improving the bridge geometry and creating a more practical and buildable solution.
- How permanent works, temporary works and construction planning were considered together, including working adjacent to the railway, permanent formwork, crane operations and bridge beam installation.
- How close collaboration between Balfour Beatty, Transport Scotland, Mott MacDonald and Network Rail helped overcome design, construction and assurance challenges, and ultimately shaped the solution.
