Rufus Foster
Technical Director, GScan LtdRufus Foster is a Chartered Structural Engineer with experience in the inspection, testing, structural assessment, design and strengthening of bridges and heavy civil infrastructure. As Technical Director at GScan, Rufus leads the adoption of muon tomography across the bridges and civil infrastructure sector.
This ground-breaking non-destructive testing technology uses naturally occurring cosmic rays to generate high-resolution 3D images of hidden elements deep within structures, allowing engineers to see what was previously unseen. Over the past year, Rufus has led GScan’s move from trials to live deployments on operational infrastructure, including the world-first application of muon tomography to half joint inspection at Glasgow’s Kingston Bridge.

Seeing Inside Ageing Bridges: Muon Tomography from In-Service Trials to Kingston Bridge
- An update on National Highways’ Structures Moonshot programme, led by AtkinsRéalis, and lessons learnt from in-service trials of novel inspection technologies on live structures.
- The unique value muon tomography brings to protecting ageing infrastructure: non-destructive, high-resolution 3D imaging of hidden elements deep within structures.
- GScan’s results from 16 bridge measurements across six countries, showing what the technology can reveal and where it adds most value.
- A case study of how muon tomography was deployed on Kingston Bridge by GScan for Transport Scotland and Amey, including planning, access and risk management while keeping the structure open to traffic throughout the survey.
