Peter Cummings
Erskine Bridge Manager, AmeyPeter Cummings is a Chartered Civil Engineer, Chartered Manager and Project Director with Amey, with over 19 years of experience delivering major transportation and infrastructure projects across Scotland. As Erskine Bridge Manager within the Southwest NMC Contract, Peter leads the strategic management, maintenance, and improvement of one of Scotland’s most significant bridge assets.
Peter has extensive experience delivering projects from feasibility and option assessment through design, procurement, construction, and close-out. Early career roles in site-based supervision on major infrastructure schemes, including the AWPR, provided valuable insight into the practical challenges of project delivery and asset management.
Accredited as an NEC3 and NEC4 Project Manager, Peter has successfully supported complex trunk road and bridge projects for Transport Scotland and local authorities. Passionate about developing future engineering talent, Peter mentors engineers through professional development programmes while working collaboratively with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary teams to deliver resilient, sustainable, and high-performing infrastructure solutions.

- Since opening in 1971, the Erskine Bridge has been a vital crossing of the River Clyde and one of Scotland's most recognisable structures, carrying millions of vehicle movements each year.
- This session explores the challenges of maintaining a major cable-stayed box girder asset at this scale, covering the current programme of inspection, maintenance and renewal, and key lessons from managing a nationally important structure in a live operational environment.
- Looking ahead, it examines the major interventions planned over the next ten years - from large-scale renewal projects to resilience improvements - and the long-term asset management strategies needed to keep ageing infrastructure safe, reliable, and fit for the decades ahead.
