James Petrie

Network Bridges Manager, BEAR Scotland

James is a Chartered Civil Engineer with more than 20 years of experience delivering structural aspects of civil engineering and transportation projects across the UK.

With a background in bridge engineering, he has held senior leadership positions within consultancy, local authority, and national infrastructure settings. Throughout his career, James has held lead design and delivery roles on several of Scotland's most significant transport schemes, including the M74 Completion, the Queensferry Crossing approach networks, and the A9 Luncarty to Pass of Birnam dualling project.

James is currently Network Bridges Manager at BEAR Scotland, responsible for more than 800 trunk road structures across south east Scotland. Acting on behalf of Transport Scotland, he leads the delivery of a multi-million-pound annual investment programme, ensuring the safe, efficient, and sustainable management of critical transport infrastructure assets.

M8 Junction 4 Half Joint Strengthening

  • Due to concerns about the condition of a half joint on a bridge carrying the M8 motorway, complex strengthening works were required.
  • Utilising BEAR Scotland’s supply chain, the detailed design, fabrication, and installation of strengthening steelwork was undertaken within very short timescales.
