Exploring Design Options for the M6 Lune Gorge

10:50 - 11:15 Repair, Refurbish, Renovate
  • Kier has been appointed by National Highways to carry out an essential maintenance programme on eight bridges spanning the M6 in Cumbria. The concrete structures are rapidly approaching the end of their serviceable life and each of them will either be repaired or refurbished.
  • The bridge renewal scheme through Lune Gorge covers a six-mile stretch of the motorway between junctions 37 and 38. Seven of the bridges support the M6 itself, while the remaining bridge carries the A685 over it.
  • The main construction phase will run for three and a half years, with works due to start in Summer 2026 and expected to be completed by Winter 2029.

A Thing So Delicate: The Hidden Voices of Scotland's Mass Concrete Viaduct

12:10 - 12:35
  • A Thing So Delicate is a hybrid, high-concept project that tells the stories of Scotland’s major mass concrete viaducts built at the height of the Victorian railway mania (1880 -1904).
  • The project is a collaboration between author, Moira McPartlin and her husband, civil engineer and photographer, Colin Baird.
  • Moira and Colin travelled through Scotland recording their adventures to find these delicate creatures, who have carried railways over a century of progress into modern day Scotland.
  • In this presentation Moira and Colin will share their adventures using photographs, historical facts and a small sample of the fiction and poetry each viaduct inspired.

The Aftermath of Storm Babet

14:00 - 14:25 Repair, Refurbish, Renovate
  • Storm Babet brought exceptional rainfall to parts of eastern Scotland with 150 to 200mm falling in the wettest areas and the Met Office issuing two red warnings for rain.
  • This presentation will look at the significant damage endured on bridges in the North East of Scotland, and the challenges involved to design and deliver repair solutions.

Reporting Bridge Precursor Events and Element Failures - a Joint Approach

10:00 - 10:25 New Construction Bridge Failures
  • Pre-cursor events are vital in preventing structural failures.
  • Unlike practice elsewhere in the world, the construction, management and operation of transport structures (excluding rail) is not regulated or subject to independent forensic investigation should a structure partially or catastrophically fail without loss of life.
  • The CROSS confidential reporting system has expanded to include confidential reports of pre-cursor and failure events in bridges and other transport structural assets, in all transportation fields.
  • The presentation sets out the context why reporting is needed, what CROSS does then outlines the initiative and how engineers and managers can report issues confidentially.
10:25

Inspection Manual for Highway Structures

10:25 - 10:50 Inspections Bridge Management
  • The Inspection Manual for Highway Structures (IMFHS) was first released in 2007; the document consisted of two complimentary volumes; Volume 1 was a reference document whilst Volume 2 acted as a quick reference for inspectors on site.
  • National Highways decided in 2023 that a refresh of the document was required and employed WSP to undertake the work.
  • The new manual is divided into 13 chapters; chapters 1 to 11 replace the original reference document; chapter 12 is the updated Inspector’s Handbook whilst chapter 13 provides informative references.
  • The IMFHS is applicable to any individual or organisation in the UK who wish to use it.
  • The presentation will describe the changes made with examples taken from the two volumes.

Reducing Suicides on Roads and Bridges

10:50 - 11:15 Bridge Safety
  • National Highways has been developing their approach to suicide prevention as part of their road safety ambition.
  • Through new research and capability, they have delivered multiple safety improvements across the network with the aim to reduce the number of people who take their own life.
  • Working with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, National Highways are developing new guidance which will support those who design roads and bridges to consider suicide risk from the outset.

Climate Risk Assessment and Cost-Benefit Analysis

11:45 - 12:10 Climate Change Resilience
  • Climate risks are rising and affecting infrastructure asset values, leading to operational issues and major disruptions.
  • Financial and economic implications as a result are also rising.
  • Climate change risk assessment tools along with a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) framework for adaptation solutions can provide basis for investment decisions and prioritisation of actions.
  • This will be discussed in light of a project with Network Rail Scotland analysing the financial implications of attending to bridge scour.
