A Thing So Delicate: The Hidden Voices of Scotland's Mass Concrete Viaduct

12:10 - 12:35 Engineering & Culture
  • A Thing So Delicate is a hybrid, high-concept project that tells the stories of Scotland’s major mass concrete viaducts built at the height of the Victorian railway mania (1880 -1904).
  • The project is a collaboration between author, Moira McPartlin and her husband, civil engineer and photographer, Colin Baird.
  • Moira and Colin travelled through Scotland recording their adventures to find these delicate creatures, who have carried railways over a century of progress into modern day Scotland.
  • In this presentation Moira and Colin will share their adventures using photographs, historical facts and a small sample of the fiction and poetry each viaduct inspired.
